Purcell Lookout trail

This trail goes up right by the bridge across Davis Creek on the old highway section. The road crosses Davis creek on a very high metal bridge (stop and take a look deep into the canyon -- I guess about 180 feet below). The trailhead is a little obscure from lack of use and is about 5 miles up.

After you get on Forest Service land you will have to endure some really obnoxious and unnecessary ditches that have been put in. My Honda scraped the front bumper on about 10 of them coming down. The engineer who designed them had the ditcher leave a much higher than necessary berm on the downhill side. I do not like them at all. They so rubbed me (and my car) the wrong way, I counted them coming down. Twenty-four in only 3.1 miles! Absurd!

The picture does not so them justice.
At least the scraped up berm needs to be lowered quite a bit.
No problem for a pickup or SUV.

There is a small parking spot on the corner to park
and one on the old road that the trail starts on.
The first mile uses an old road bed.

Here we look up to the ridge where we are heading.

The trail is getting very overgown
with alders on the old road bed.

First we have to drop down and cross a creek.

Then we have to cross the creek over the rocks.

Good spot for dogs to drink.
Not much water for humans beyond this either.
Hikers MUST take water.

Climb up the old over-grown road and right
near a roaring falls deep in the canyon and brush
(no pictures available)
To the right you will see this trail signt.

This "trail" goes up an even older road bed for almost a mile before it
becomes just a trail. That is much more pleasant and not nearly so brushy.
There is a lot of debris on the trail.

The last three-quarters of a mile there are a few serious log blowdowns
that would make it difficult for anyone who might want to bring stock up the trail.
